aka Church fathers. Byzantine icon depicting Saint Gregory the Theologian, Saint John Chrysostom, and Saint Basil the Great. These men were major theologians and bishops from the fourth century and are venerated as Fathers of the Church in both Eastern and Western Christian traditions. In the icon, Saint Gregory the Theologian is positioned on the left and is identifiable by his thick grey beard. Saint John Chrysostom is shown in the center with a shorter, darker beard. Saint Basil the Great is on the right and is distinguished by his long, pointed beard that is brown or dark in color. The Orthodox Church celebrates these three saints together every year on January thirtieth during the feast known as the Synaxis.
